Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest and most prestigious national park, located in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, it was renamed in honor of legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, who played a key role in its creation. Spanning over 520 square kilometers, Corbett is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers alike.

Famous for being the first park to come under Project Tiger in 1973, Jim Corbett is not just a destination it's an unforgettable wilderness experience.

1 : A Rich Wildlife Experience

The park is best known for its population of Royal Bengal Tigers, which are elusive yet often sighted during safaris. Apart from tigers, the park is home to a variety of animals including leopards, elephants, sloth bears, jackals, deer (sambar, chital, barking deer), wild boars, and more.

Jim Corbett also boasts an impressive diversity of over 600 bird species, making it one of the best bird-watching destinations in India. From the vibrant plumage of kingfishers and hornbills to the graceful flight of crested serpent eagles, the park is a paradise for bird lovers.

2 : Safari Zones & Gates of Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett National Park is divided into several tourism zones, each offering unique landscapes and wildlife viewing experiences:

  • Dhikala Zone – The most famous and scenic zone, known for its grasslands and elephant herds. It also offers a chance to stay inside the forest rest houses.
  • Bijrani Zone – Rich in flora and fauna, this zone is known for tiger sightings and beautiful forest trails.
  • Jhirna Zone – Open throughout the year, Jhirna is good for spotting sloth bears, wild boars, and deer.
  • Dhela Zone – Relatively new, it’s known for its dense vegetation and variety of wildlife.
  • Durga Devi Zone – Ideal for birdwatching and peaceful nature walks, located in the hilly terrain of the park.
3 : Safari Adventures

Jim Corbett offers thrilling jeep safaris, canter safaris, and even elephant safaris (in selected zones). Safaris are conducted in the early morning and afternoon, guided by experienced naturalists.

To get the best chance of spotting a tiger or elephant, it’s recommended to book your safaris in advance and choose the zones wisely based on the season and wildlife movement.

4 : Flora and Scenic Beauty

The park features a stunning variety of ecosystems, from sal forests and grasslands to riverine belts and hills. The Ramganga River flows through the park, adding to its scenic charm and supporting a rich aquatic life including gharials and otters.

5 : Best Time to Visit Jim Corbett

Jim Corbett National Park is open to visitors from mid-November to mid-June, with some zones like Jhirna and Dhela open year-round. The best time for tiger sightings is from March to June, when animals gather near water sources. Winter months (November to February) are ideal for birdwatching and enjoying pleasant weather.

6 : How to Reach Jim Corbett National Park

Jim Corbett National Park is located near Ramnagar in Uttarakhand and is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The nearest railway station is Ramnagar, just 12 km from the park, with regular trains from Delhi and major cities. The closest airport is Pantnagar Airport (approx. 80 km), while Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi) is about 260 km away. From there, taxis and buses are available. The park is easily accessible by road from Delhi, Nainital, and Dehradun, making it a popular weekend getaway for nature and wildlife lovers.
