About Gir National Park

Gir National Park, located in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, is India’s only sanctuary for the Asiatic lion and one of the most unique and important wildlife destinations in the country. Spanning across 1,412 square kilometers, Gir is not just a park but a biodiversity hotspot that boasts an impressive variety of flora and fauna.

The park was established in 1965 as the Gir Wildlife Sanctuary and later upgraded to a national park in 1975. It is home to over 600 Asiatic lions, which are the primary attraction. These lions are smaller but equally powerful than their African counterparts, and their sighting is the highlight of any safari in the park.

In addition to the Asiatic lions, Gir is also home to leopards, striped hyenas, Indian wolves, wild boars, and spotted deer. The park also has a rich diversity of birdlife, with over 300 species of birds, including eagles, vultures, peafowls, and hornbills. The Gir Forest is also one of the best places in India for safari enthusiasts and birdwatchers.

The park’s terrain is a mix of dry deciduous forests, open grasslands, and scrubby hills, with the Hiran and Machhundri rivers running through it, providing water sources for wildlife. The park is divided into several safari zones, with the most famous being Sasan Gir, which is the primary entry point.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Gir National Park is from December to March, during the winter season, when the weather is cooler and comfortable for safaris. During this period, wildlife sightings are frequent, and the cool temperatures make it ideal for exploring the park.

The winter months bring pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 30°C, making it the perfect time for safaris. Lions, leopards, and other wildlife are more active, and the clear skies offer great opportunities for wildlife photography.

While summer temperatures rise (up to 40°C), this is also a good time to visit if you're looking to spot Asiatic lions and other wildlife near water sources. The dry season forces animals to gather around waterholes, increasing chances of sightings. Safaris are best in the early morning or evening to avoid the midday heat.

The park is closed from July to October due to heavy rainfall and for conservation purposes. This period is best avoided for tourism. For a balanced experience, plan your visit between December and March for pleasant weather and exciting wildlife encounters.
